Have a problem? Your neighbor might be able to help. Or at least try. So when Elizabeth disappears, the whole area turns out to search for her. Although she is twenty-two, she is childlike. That fact makes everyone try that much harder to find her. The men scour the streets and yards and vacant lots, even inspecting the growth along the river. The women cook and bake to keep the men energized. Elizabeth's father is an older widower and is distraught that his daughter is missing. As this part of the story unfolds, the reader meets the various neighbors. Grace is eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child. She knows her pregnancy is painful to her friend who lost her first child in a crib death. There is a rumor about Alder Avenue that prostitutes await the workers from the local factory on payday. When one of these women is found murdered, there is no end of speculation as to who is responsible. Many of the residents of Alder Avenue reveal their inner thoughts which mostly revolve around their own particular problems. Of which, there are many. Normally, a writer is told to show not tell their story. This book tells most of it! And it works very well indeed. It's a grim tale told marvellously with, at times, a paucity of words that adds to the suspense engendered – suspense that grows as the search for the missing girl continues. The astounding ending caught me by complete surprise. Until She Comes Home is the second novel from author Lori Roy. Her first, Bent Road, was chosen Favorite Suspense Novel of the year by The New York Times Book Review. This one deserves special recognition also.
