Meg McLean, head of the Columbia Gorge Library, is under suspicion in the death of one of the librarians; the woman fell from her deck overlooking the Gorge. Pushed? Jumped? Accident?

Beyond Confusion by Sheila Simonson grabs the reader's attention almost from the very first page and never lets go until the final, satisfying one.

A slight bump in an already bumpy road is that Meg's romantic interest – he wants marriage, she's not sure – is the Undersheriff and his intervention in her possible arrest is a conflict of interest. He must keep hands off.

He needn't back off incidents of vandalism and arson and a violent assault on the library's bookmobile though. Are these things related to the death of the woman? She was not the most popular of women who wanted everything to be run under her jurisdiction. She leaves behind a most troubled teenager.

The outcome is a surprise that I didn't see coming. Will you? Good book and well worth the read.
