I love little books like Every Day Is a Blessing and have often given them as holiday gifts; there's something very appealing about giving something to be used every single day. In a note at the beginning the author quotes a Russian proverb that 'Every day is a messenger of God.' He then offers us quotations and brief stories from diverse cultures and traditions all around the world - one for each day of the year.

Here are a few that spoke to me. Colette says 'What a wonderful life I've had. I only wish I had realized it sooner.' 'Keep a green tree alive in your heart and a songbird may come to sing there' is a lyrical Chinese proverb. Gandhi tells us that 'The fragrance always remains in the hand that gives the rose' and from Rabindranath Tagore - 'God respects me when I work, but loves me when I sing.'

The 'Roster of Great Souls' at the back of this inspiring, well chosen selection ranges from the Babylonians, Greeks, Arabians and Mayans to modern sources like Erica Jong, Elie Wiesel and Ursula K. Le Guin. Here's one from Chief Isapwo Muksika Crowfoot ... 'What is life? It is a flash of a firefly in the night. It is a breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is as the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.'

I could go on for days, 365 to be precise, but do yourself a favor and illuminate your own days, or those of a loved one, with a delightful collection that will lift your spirits.
