This little paperback was written by clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Dr. Mary Lamia to help teens understand how emotions inform them, affect the decisions they make and motivate them to achieve their goals.

It is no secret that teens experience what seem to be a never ending series of emotional highs and lows. They key is to not only level out the peaks and valleys but also enable the young person to understand what is causing these swings.

The author's goal is to help young people gain insight into this often misunderstood and tumultuous aspect of their personalities. 'Knowing how to interpret and respond to emotions gives teens an advantage academically, socially and personally,' explains Dr. Lamia.

The reader will discover that anxiety can improve creativity, productivity and the quality of one's work. Also, overvaluing happiness can possibly lead an individual to be less happy, even when happiness is within the person's reach.

Teens will also discover that a friend's embarrassing behavior won't reflect on them and that venting anger doesn't really help a bad or frustrating situation.

Pay attention to the What's It to You? sections in each chapter and the numerous examples the author cites in her discussion of emotions. There's plenty of current psychological research here that will help the reader gain insight into a significant part of who he or she is.
