The year is 1984. Freya Kallas's diplomat father died in a horrible explosion while they were stationed in New Zealand. Now Freya, her mother and her little sister, Olivia have returned home to Canada. Freya is having a hard time shaking off headaches caused by the flu they all caught just before leaving New Zealand.

She's also having trouble adjusting to her new life. Anyone might feel that way, having just lost a father, traveled halfway around the world, and been thrown into a new school in the middle of the school year. That's what Freya tells herself until she sees Garren Lowe while on a museum trip to Toronto. She feels she knows him. He is more real to her than her new life. Garren thinks she's crazy when she follows him home and introduces herself. He insists he doesn't know her.

Deflated Freya goes home, but she can't stop thinking about Garren. He's even part of her dreams. Dreams that seem more real than the life she's leading. She has to give him one more chance. When they meet again, he is forced to admit that they do have things in common. Things that could add up to a conspiracy. Their search for answers leads them into a dangerous world where they take on forces that will do anything to keep them from learning the truth.
