Summer lost her mama when she died during childbirth. She also lost her papa who almost died from grief. Her aunt Nancy took care of them both, although her papa seemed not to notice.

One morning, when Summer in eleven, her papa brings home a woman to be her new step-mama. The woman has bewitched her father into marrying her. She pushes Aunt Nancy out of their lives and brings magic and poison into their home. She mixes special vitamin drinks for Papa. Soon he stops speaking and taking care of himself, although he still works zombie-like in the garden. She also wants something from Summer and if Summer doesn't give it, the heart of a child makes a powerful charm.

Set in the mountains of West Virginia, this twentieth century fairy tale is magical and suspenseful with an engaging heroine.
