Kelvin always wanted to be a superhero, but no one knew how or why some people become superheroes. One day he becomes too ill to get out of bed and needs help to walk to the bathroom. He even misses the superhero movie he and his dad planned on going to see. On his worst day ever, Kelvin ends up in the hospital. His illness resulted from the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.

After learning about test strips, insulin shots, and carbohydrates, Kelvin visits a special doctor, and finds out what type of superhero he is about to become. He is fitted with an insulin pump to keep his diabetes under control and the doctor shows him how to use his new superpowers to help children worldwide who have diabetes. Kelvin becomes Fly-A-Betes, or Super K for short.

This superhero fantasy with its colorful illustrations will be a great resource for children with diabetes. The last two pages of the book include a full page of Super K's Diabetes Decoder with definitions of words often used when discussing diabetes, and an illustration using a juice box to explain how diabetes works.
