ixth graders Nora and Charlotte are best friends in Fall 1990, the year Rose (Charlotte's babysitter) goes missing. They drift apart, but when Rose's body is found years later, Charlotte calls Nora and invites her to visit. Nora goes back to stay with Charlotte who still lives in the house she grew up in.
ora was the last person to see Rose alive. Rose often walked Nora home from Charlotte's and then continued to her own house, as happened that night. Nora and Charlotte played detective after Rose's disappearance. It helped them deal with their grief, but even with the help of the Time-Life Books on the paranormal, they couldn't come up with any clues about where the babysitter had gone.
old in first person by Nora, the story skips back and forth between the time just before Rose disappeared and the present. Charlotte has a reason for wanting Nora to visit. She hints that she believes Nora knows more than she's saying. Charlotte wants them to reinvestigate Rose's disappearance just as they did when they were eleven.
his story is well told, but not the
I was expecting. There is no suspense and no danger to either Charlotte or Nora. Lacking that, this is primarily a tale of grief, sympathy, and going home again.
