This is the second book in Gilman's new adventure series. Introduced in The Devil's Breath, fifteen-year-old Max Gordon is in danger again. This time he is in the French Pyrenees competing in an X-treme sports challenge. The competition becomes lethal when a teen gangster called Sharkface does everything he can to take Max out - and not just from the competition.

Meanwhile, Max rescues a girl name Sophie from bikers, who were following her because of her dad's work as an endangered animal advocate. Next Max witnesses the shooting of a Basque monk, who leaves him with a cryptic verbal clue and a medallion. When Max is accused of the murder, he and his friend Sayid go into hiding, while trying to find out why the monk was killed and who is framing Max.

Bobby Morell, another X-team sports competitor, allows Max and Sayid to stay at his grandmother's chateau. Many of Bobby's friends are in and out of the house, including Sophie. Max isn't sure who he can trust and wonders why Sophie keeps showing up wherever he is.

The action is constant and Max moves fearlessly from one dangerous situation to the next. The plot is complex and sometimes confusing, but Ice Claw should be a hit with boys aged twelve and up.
