In Halifax, Nova Scotia, Elyse Vanderzell falls to her death from a balcony. She has been in town for one day, bringing her two children from Toronto to spend their summer vacation with their father. The police suspect her ex-husband Randall Barrett, who was at the house a few hours before, arguing with Elyse in front of the children.

Randall has a legal firm, McGrath-Barrett. So when he is arrested for Elyse's murder, he calls on his employee Kate Lang to defend him. Kate has limited criminal experience, but she is the only one who believes he is innocent. He is known around the firm for his violent temper and mood swings.

Kate has been recovering from an encounter with Craig Peters, a serial killer known as the Body Butcher, in which she fought for her life. Though she killed Peters, she has been scarred emotionally and physically. She hates loud noises, is plagued by nightmares, and ended her engagement to a detective because of the ordeal. She has thrown herself into her work, and knows Randall Barrett has an interest in her.

Randall and his fifteen-year-old son Nick have had a rocky relationship. Nick informs the police he saw his father throw his mother to her death. Nick is so sure of the facts he seeks justice himself. With everything pointing to Randall as the killer, Kate has to come up with evidence of his innocence, and find the real murderer before he strikes again.

Indefensible is the second book in the Kate Lang series following Damaged. Fast moving (part legal mystery and part thriller), this is a great stand alone read.
