Princess Adele, heir to the Empire of Equatoria, a remnant of the old tropical British Empire, is on a goodwill tour of the independent cities on the frontier. For her, this is her last escape from the tedium of court life before she marries. Her marriage, to an American senator she has never met, will be a political alliance between two great powers. When her airship is attacked by vampires, she escapes with the help of a masked legend named Greyfriar. This is the first book of a trilogy. It takes a new look at vampires who are said to be parasites who've lived from the beginning of time, but until the Great Killing of 1870 were not a threat to mankind. Princess Adelle discovers within herself strength of body and mind and begins to understand that true heroism involves sacrifice. She also finds romance. This was a great read.
