This year Dash a has taken Christmas into his own hands. He doesn't want to be with either of his divorced parents. He tells each parent that he will spend the holidays with the other and happily plans to spend his school break alone in his mother's Manhattan apartment while his mother and father vacation with their current spouses.

Lily loves Christmas, but isn't happy about spending the vacation alone with her older brother. This is the first Christmas that her family has ever been separated and Lily misses their usual traditions. It's Langston's idea for Lily to hide a Book of Dares on the shelf of a renowned secondhand bookstore called The Strand. The red Moleskine is full of literary clues. Lily doesn't expect to find anyone who'll understand or care enough to accept the dares.

Dash finds the book and can't help but accept the first dare. He adds a dare for the book's owner. With each dare, the pair reveal more about themselves. Members of Lily's large family, hoping to keep Lily safe, keep popping up at bookstores and museums.

Cohn and Levithan are both bestselling authors of young adult fiction. As a team, this is their third successful book. All three are great fun to read. In this story told in alternating points of view, Dash and Lily are intriguing characters, well worth spending a part of your holidays with.
