In the last Sharon McCone novel, the San Francisco detective was shot in the head and spent the entire book in the hospital while the agency looked for her shooter.

In Coming Back, Sharon goes to physical therapy daily, working relentlessly to return her body to normal. Inside she doesn't feel like the strong smart investigator she once was. She holds her loved ones and even her husband at a distance while she tries to establish her independence.

She returns to the agency and works on an old case that is ready to go to appeal. Some think her return to work is premature and doubt her abilities.

When a friend at the rehab center suddenly drops out, Shar goes looking for her. She finds Piper drugged and being cared for by an aunt, although she had told Shar that she has no relatives. When Shar goes back the next day, the apartment has been cleaned and painted, ready for a new tenant.

Hy sees a covert disappearance when Shar tells him about the apartment. He suggests she leave it alone. Whatever organization erased Piper is backed by unlimited resources and employ highly trained agents. It may even be backed by the government.

Shar is back with a vengeance. She races against time to find Piper, unknowingly putting another agent in danger.
