The story opens on a win for Sloane and his new partner, Tom Pendergrass - a malpractice case in which a young child died. Sloane's uneasiness about their victory increases after he's contacted by toy designer Kyle Horgan who tells him 'The doctor did not kill that boy ... I did' and warns that more children could die, before thrusting a file upon Sloane and disappearing from his life. The attorney's anxiety about the case increases when the pediatrician concerned commits suicide. Kendall Toys is about to release a hot new product - Metamorphis - just in time for Christmas sales. They badly need it to forestall a corporate takeover. The toy, which is manufactured in China, utilizes a large number of tiny but very powerful magnets. Anne Leroy, an employee of the Product Safety Agency, is about to publish a report on the dangers of such magnets to small children. After her report is suppressed, Anne resigns, but it doesn't end there. When a hit man follows Sloane home, looking for Horgan's file, the attorney's life is changed forever. But, despite having to balance tough issues in his personal life, he is left even more determined to get to the bottom of the case. Sloane's best friend, Charles Jenkins, has his back, and uses his CIA contacts to dig deeper. When Sloane launches a court case to force an independent inspection of Kendall's new toy, the company fights back, in and out of court. Robert Dugoni gives fans another gripping read in Bodily Harm, with plenty of surprises - as well as a remarkably rational closure to a custody case - to maintain reader interest.
