Reading the back cover, one realizes that Thompson took on a monumental task in encompassing the history of this beguiling nation in one paperback. Amazing! Most scholars and historians tend to divide Egypt's long history into eras - prehistoric, pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, medieval Islamic, Ottoman and modern - while Thompson tells us that 'few if any other countries have as many threads of continuity running through their entire historical experience.' From first page to last, the reader cannot help but become engrossed in the vast store of knowledge available. From before King Tut to today, Egypt has played a significant role in world history. Thompson explores the importance of the Nile to the Egyptians. Rainfall is scarce in the Nile Valley, so the flooding of that longest river in the world is a miracle to those trying to scratch a living from the soil. Perhaps if that were not so, we might not have Egypt's rich history at all. Anyone who has an interest in Egypt's 5,000 years of history, has visited the country, or has travel plans, should acquire A History of Egypt: From Earliest Times to the Present for their bookshelves – reading first from cover to cover, of course.
