Subtitled 'Power, Hope, and Struggle in Cesar Chavez's Farm Worker Movement', this new book on the farm labor organizer offers a fresh look at his rise to international acclaim, and also addresses how the labor movement he guided faltered in the later years.

Pawel brings together the stories of key individuals whose inside knowledge and work alongside Chavez offer a new and somewhat controversial look at the early days of the unionization movement.

The period the narrative covers stretches from 1965 and the Grape Strike in the San Joaquin Valley, through the struggle in the lettuce fields of the Salinas Valley to early 1989. Besides Chavez, the cast of diverse individuals who are presented in this sweeping history includes Jerry Cohen, Sabino Lopez, Eliseo Medina, Jessica Govea and Gretchen Laue.
