Nine-year-old Murielle Lyman's parents flee the county after embezzling millions of dollars from the people who invested their life savings at their brokerage firm. Murielle's aunt is taking her to the airport so that she can leave with her dad, but halfway there she changes her mind and drives them home, where FBI agents and other law enforcement officials wait.

Five years later, Cathy Ferris is taking an accelerated Latin course at a high school near her home when Tommy Lyman sees her across the school cafeteria. He won't shut up about his cousin Murielle even though Cathy explains it's a case of mistaken identity. The entire summer school of overachievers hear the exchange. After hearing the story of Murielle Lyman's parents, their imaginations go wild. Whether Cathy is Murielle or isn't, the FBI is called in and want to use Cathy as bait.

Cathy Ferris is forced to face what happened years ago and make hard decisions concerning her parents and her future. Cooney has written many thrillers for young adults. This one belongs at the top of the list along with The Face on the Milk Carton.
