John Irving has a knack of hooking you into his tales fast and easy. With this book even the title begged you to take it from the shelf. Actually, the title features in the last line of the book where we are reminded of the 'dire circumstances of his last night in Twisted River'.

This is a great story with robust events and bigger than life characters but enough reality to keep you grounded. The book has many circumstances similar to the real events of Irving's New England life, which is somewhat of a distraction as at times you try to separate the autobiographical aspects from the fictional story. But the narrative is too strong - with grand themes and moral dilemmas that challenge the reader - to be distracted for long.

This book is fun to read with a style of good old story telling. There is plenty of humour and just as much pathos, as each page reveals unusual situations that grip the reader to the sequence of events.

Last Night In Twisted River is John Irving's twelfth novel and stands to be a classic like many of his others.
