Hate List begins at the start of Valerie Leftman's senior year at Garvin High School. Summer has been a welcome hiatus where she could hide out without seeing or talking to anyone. After leaving the school in an ambulance five months ago, she is reluctant to face the other students and her teachers.

Valerie helped her boyfriend, Nick Levil put together a Hate List including everyone who had ever taunted, bullied or put down either of them. When Nick opens fire in the school cafeteria, Valerie is as surprised and horrified as everyone there. All she can think of is making him stop. In doing so, she is shot, a wound that almost kills her, but she saves the life of a classmate someone on the hate list.

Months later, her classmates know she helped make up the Hate List, but they aren't sure whether she was a part of Nick's terrible plot or a hero for taking a bullet to stop him.

Despite what he did, Valerie still loves the troubled boy she knew. The tragedy he left behind and the guilt she feels for helping him create the Hate List haunt her. Getting on with her life won't be easy.
