Sophomore Schuyler Van Alen is the sole remaining heir to the Van Alen Legacy. Although her family once helped build New York City, they are now without money and power.

Being without money at the prestigious private school that Schuyler attends already sets her apart from the student body, but her vintage style of clothing bought from second hand stores irritates Mimi Force, the school's Queen Bee. Mimi resents Schuyler because she doesn't seem to mind not being part of the popular crowd. Schuyler prefers the company of her lifelong friend Oliver Hazard-Perry and new friend Dylan. Jack Force, Mimi's twin, is another matter. Schuyler can't help but be attracted to him and he seems to reciprocate.

Schuyler lives with her grandmother Cordelia in the mansion the family built years before. Her mother has been comatose since Schuyler was born and she has never known her father. Schuyler is fifteen when the story begins and her life is about to change. She discovers the true Van Alen Legacy. She is a vampire, a Blue Blood, one of an ancient, worldwide group of vampires whose influence changes world events. Now her real education begins. Memories of past lives begin to stir while something is changing in the New York Blue Bloods. Schuyler is the only one who can find out the truth about those preying on a group that has remained immortal for centuries.

De La Cruz creates vampires different from the ones we usually read about. Their histories are important and, to remain immortal, they are reincarnated with memories from their past lives. Her interesting concept keeps this from being just another vampire series.
