I just finished the last page of Jodi Picoult's Harvesting the Heart, wishing there were more to turn so that I could continue the story of Nicholas and Paige.

Paige's mother left her and her father and disappeared. Paige fell in love as a schoolgirl and eventually had an abortion and then left town. Marrying Nicholas, she has a baby, Max, and leaves home when he is three months old. This heart-melting book deals with her quest to find her mother and with her own soul searching in an attempt to understand why she copied her mother and ran away - as well as how she copes with the abortion, even years later.

Picoult has the ability to delve into her characters' souls and reveal all that makes them who they are. She has done this splendidly in Harvesting the Heart. Paige is not just running away from home; she is trying to run towards her future.

Nicholas is so angry with his wife that he can't feel what is in his heart. His parents are capable of changing their minds, but it takes years for them to see they are hurting themselves most. Paige's mother has come to terms with her own personality.

We all have to face the unforeseen vicissitudes of life at one time or another. How we face them proves who we are, as Nicholas and Paige discover in this dazzling tale of love.
