Unusual writing captures the imagination, and Annie Dillard has us in thrall in The Maytrees. Where else would the following sentences make sense: 'He sprang to life. He fell asleep'? Each page has its own beauty, with deep philosophical questions thrown in among the mind's ruminations.

A slim story with deep meaning, The Maytrees is an account of Lou and Toby Maytree: how they met, married, separated and then came together again. Surrounded by unusual friends and a landscape wondrously described, Lou and Toby marvel at each other, the tides and the stars.

Their life is simple yet underscored with knowledge both practical and poetic. When all is said and done, if we are lucky, we are left with love and beauty. Lou and Toby were lucky. And Annie Dillard has written a work for us to reflect on and admire.
