Although Torey and his classmates grew up with Christopher Creed, their reaction to his possible death is not what it should be. Sixteen-year-old Torey watches as his friends make jokes as they discuss whether Creed ran away or committed suicide. The note he left could have been intended as a suicide note although he was not specific and his body hasn't been found.

Creed was a weird kid even in elementary school. He just couldn't fit in and he was so annoying that he pushed until someone slugged him. Torey remembers hitting him in elementary school and so did just about every other guy in school. Now Torey wishes he'd tried harder, but his friends see the note and Creed's disappearance as fodder for the gossip machine. When they become bored with that, they begin to conjure up a possible murderer.

Torey doesn't like where the gossip is going. With the help of Ali, a neighborhood friend, he resolves to find out what really happened to Creed before someone gets accused of murder.

This is award winning novelist Carol Plum-Ucci's successful first novel. Christopher Creed's story is a first rate mystery with a touch of supernatural and a narrator who is learning to have empathy for everyone.
