Young readers will root for the daring mouse (Eddy) who stars in Jeanne Willis's cautionary - and cheeky - tale (in verse). Tony Ross's antic illustrations underline the humor. It begins, 'There once was a very daring mouse / And his name was Grill Pan Eddy. / He lived in a box of porridge oats / In a crumpled cardboard beddy.'

Each midnight, this charming - and very wily - furred villain saunters out of a crack in the wall to create havoc in the home, daring its weary occupants: 'I'm Grill Pan Eddy! Everybody ready? Catch me if you can!' He blows open the fridge, helps himself at the dinner table, rides the vermin man's dog like 'a cowboy on the prairie', traps the owl that was supposed to prey on him, and chases the fat cat.

What's to be done? Adopt him of course. The family grows 'quite attached / To dear old Grill Pan Eddy' and sadly mourn his passing - until a delightful surprise ending for them and for readers. Grill Pan Eddy is irresistible fun.
