In May,When Montreal

By Wesley Williamson

(Sonnet written during one or other of the various Québec separatist crises)

In May, when Montreal
Explodes into Summer,
Disbelieving the evidence
Of his starved Winter senses,
The backyard gardener touches,
Gingerly, the new fire-bright bud,
First manifesto
Of the revolutionary underground,

And wonders, with a sudden qualm,
How those unruly elements
Had seethed unseen
Beneath his bourgeois feet
To present him, finally,
With this fait accompli.
